Rotary Club award to Helen Bayliss

Congratulations to FoBC committee member Helen Bayliss who was presented with the "Tom Morrison Community Commendation" by Sale Rotary Club on 30 October 2018. In addition to all her work for the Friends of the Bridgewater Canal (Sale), Helen was one of the founders of the Sale Wombles litter picking group. This award recognised all the work that Helen does for the community in the Sale area and beyond.

New Litter Bin installed September 2017

The new litter bin has now been installed on the towpath a couple of hundred yards on the Stretford side of White's Bridge (Dane Road). Many thanks for the grant from "Make Sale Smile" and to the Peel team from Bridgewater Canal Company for the installation work. The bin will be maintained and emptied by volunteers from the Friends of the Bridgewater Canal (Sale).

Ian Stuart, our Chairman, and Mark Eaton, our Treasurer, received the cheque from the Mayor and Mayoress of Trafford.

More Flower Beds

The Friends Group has planted out with daffodils the triangle area, informally known as "Helen's Bed", near White's Bridge (Dane Road).

These "before" and "after" pictures show the improvement.

The bluebells which were planted on the towpath near Roebuck Lane are now also in bloom.

Litter Bins

The Friends Group has provided two litter bins. One is on the opposite bank to the Bridge Inn at Sale and the other is on the towpath near Raglan Road. The bins are regularly emptied by a rota of volunteers from the Group.

Trafford Ramblers claiming new Right of Way

Trafford Ramblers are trying to establish a claim of a new public right of way along the offside of the Bridgewater Canal, i.e. side opposite the towpath, between the Baguley Brook and Park Road, Timperley at the Metro Tram station.

Ramblers have been talking to both the Bridgewater Canal Management and Transport for Greater Manchester about the proposed claim.

An early decision is the start and end points of a 20 year period of access, by the public at large, as of right and without hindrance i.e. people considered they had a right to walk on the path and no one stopped them.

Could you let me know the date you started to use the path, the date you stopped (you may still be using it so 'stopped' will be today's date) and, if it applies, any dates between which you did not use it and the reason why.

You can email this information to me, post it or phone me. This will be a small part of the details you are required to write down in a form called an 'Evidence of Use' (EofU) form. Once I know the dates between which there is ample evidence of use, then I will let you have the EofU form. I will offer guidance on how to complete the EofU form although of course, the information you enter onto the form must be yours.

Helen Bayliss wins Award

Leading member of the Friends Group, Helen Bayliss, has won Trafford Partnership's Green Volunteer of the Year Award. The awards were presented by the Mayor of Trafford, Cllr Jane Baugh (who is also a member of the Friends Group) at the award ceremony at The Point (Lancashire Cricket Club)on 7th March 2012.

Helen organises the regular litter picking events along the Canal. However, she doesn't limit her activities to the Canal and regularly carries out clean up operations at Sale Water Park and in other parts of Sale and Altrincham.

Congratulations to Helen for this well-deserved award!
