The group Friends of the Bridgewater Canal (Sale) concerns itself with a four kilometre stretch of the Canal which runs north to south through Sale from the bridge carrying the M60 in the north to Timperley Bridge (Park Road) in the south. The Canal more or less bisects Sale east from west.
It is Sale's most significant feature, historically fascinating and very attractive in places. It is not so much a "hidden" gem as one which is taken for granted. Our aim is to remedy this.
2011 was the 250th Anniversary of the Bridgewater Canal. The committee, in conjunction with other local groups, organised several celebratory events: an exhibition, several walks covering in total the full length of the canal, and three canal boat trips. We were delighted that so many people joined us to enjoy these events.
As reported in the News section, in 2013 Tom Everett from our Group has worked with members of the Sale Photographic Society, and Mike Webb and his team from Peel Holdings,to produce a contemporary photographic record along the whole length of the Canal.
